There are people, including family members, angry about many topics. These include religious differences, political differences, business differences, etc.
How do we go about handling hot topics? Well, some differences we can just let go, as they will get resolved in eternity, and are not worth arguing about now. Others may need to be resolved. So, can we create a cheat sheet that could help us in dicey discussions? Perhaps the one below could be useful to you.
LOVERS of Truth Insightful Dialogue Principles
Healthy, safe place for discussing today’s issues
- I have received God’s love for the truth (2 Thess. 2:10).
- I will present the truth with meekness and gentleness (2 Cor. 10:1).
- I will speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15).
- I will ask the Spirit to lead me into all truth (Jn. 16:13).
- I acknowledge that I see through a glass darkly (1 Cor. 13:12).
- I will not take up a reproach against another (Ps. 15:3).
- I will honor all people (1 Pet. 2:17- name-calling is inappropriate).
- I can disagree without becoming disagreeable (Eph. 4:29).
Participation
- I am prepared to share insights backed up with sound data and Scripture.
- I let others speak and I will listen carefully and honor and respond with empathy to the points they are making.
- I will not participate if I cannot respond in gentleness, love and humility.
Result: We are a light to the world, spreading truth with a humble, meek attitude.
Protocol
- I provide links to sound data and Scripture.
- I allow everyone to speak once before I speak a second time (limit 2 minutes).
- The group moderator ensures rules are followed.
- Begin with prayer for open hearts and minds, revelation insights, love, and a hunger for truth.
- Close with a journaling time where people all hear from God, and those desiring to read journaling may.
- Anticipate a 60–90-minute meeting with ongoing reflection on what is shared.
Underlying principles
- I accept that the Bible is true and to be interpreted by the Spirit.
- I believe that in a multitude of counselors there is safety.
Journaling application
- Lord, what differences are so inconsequential that they are not worth discussing?
- Lord, what issues need to be discussed, and could using the above suggestions help us through the discussions?
Commune with God by: 1) becoming still, 2) beholding Jesus, 3) tuning to His River of spontaneous thoughts, pictures, and feelings, and 4) recording this flow. Then test it using Scripture and the hearts of my spiritual advisors. See this link.
